Some Basic On-page SEO Rules

When you are adding a new page to your website or editing an existing page, you MUST consider the on-page SEO (search engine optimisation) rules.  You should consider this list as a checklist to review both before and after you have put together a page for your website.

Domain name: (www.your-website.com.au)

  • Domain should include all keywords
  • Don’t use IDN keywords ones with special characters
  • Use hyphens instead of underscores to separate words.
  • Your domain should be older than 2 years

Page Content

  • Images should always have alternative texts
  • Keyword density for visible content should be 5% - 7%
  • Keep the links to a reasonable number (fewer that 100)
  • Offer unique content on your page
  • Optimise page load time of your site (do not use large images)

Headline tags

  • Use headlines to structure your content
  • Use H1 (heading 1) only one time
  • H1 (heading 1) should include all keywords
  • Use H2 (heading 2) and H3 (heading 3) tags

Page Title tag

  • Use this tag only one time
  • Title should include all keywords
  • Length should not be greater than 65 characters
  • Meta-Description should not contain more than 15 words

Page Meta-Description tag

  • Use this tag only one time
  • Meta-Description should include all keywords
  • Length should not be greater than 150 characters
  • Meta-Description should not contain more than 30 words

Page Meta-Keywords tag

  • Use this tag only one time
  • Meta-Keywords should include all keywords
  • Use only relevant keywords which can be found in the content
  • Tag should not contain more than 10 keywords
  • Write Keywords comma separated
  • Write keywords lowercase

Page URL or Path (/)

  • This is in your Alias for an article
  • Try to keep the path short
  • Don’t use dynamic parameters
  • Use hyphens instead of underscore to separate words
  • Words in the path use be lowercase
  • Path should not go deeper than 3 levels.
